Sector Reports :: Machine tools market in Russia

The Russian machine tools market is one of the most dynamic markets due to the necessity of refurbishing the numerous heavy engineering production sites. According to the data provided by the Ministry of Industry and Science not less than 80% out of the 1.5 million machines tools currently operated in Russia require replacement or major refurbishment.

First of all, because the trend in the machine tools sector is an excellent indicator of the interest of industry as a whole in new investments. This indicator measures business optimism, the growth objectives considered achievable, and the willingness to mobilise economic resources by increasing risk capital. And the fact that on an international, European and domestic level the production of machine tools is clearly recovering marks an evident turnaround of the depressing trend which characterised 2002 and 2003.

Increased demand for machine tools for Russian industry has led to increased sales of machinery for the surging oil and gas industry, as well as for the entire gamut of the metal working industries including the railway and chemical industries.

Satisfying the needs of the manufacturing industry are imports totalling over 75% of total sales in 2005 with the balance supplied by the revived Russian machine tool builder manufacturers.

The machine building and metalworking industry within the industrial structure of Russia is over 18%. These fields comprise the largest sector in general manufacturing in Russia contrary to common opinion about absolute dominance of fuel industry (consisting of oil and gas industries.)
Since Russia is highly dependant upon foreign suppliers to meet demand, the opportunity to showcase their latest products and technologies can best be seen at Rosmould and SubConRos.

The depreciation of capital assets in the Russian industry reached 52.8 % in 2004.
According to statistics the depreciation of equipment in the heavy engineering industry has reached 72%. The share of equipment over 20 years old has increased from 15% in 1990 to 305 in 2000.

Russian economic reforms, integration of this country into the world community and coming entry into the World Trade Organization make development of the machine building and metal working industries a priority.

The main goal of Russia at present is the re-equipping of its enterprises.
