The AIIAP Mission
The European Masters Course "Advanced Instrumentation and Informatics in
Astronomy and Physics" (AIIAP) is a unique interdisciplinary and inter-university project,
offered by a Dutch-Belgian-French-German-Swedish consortium of acclaimed research groups at
classical universities together with nearby first-rank technical research institutes of
international stature. The Masters Course is designed to train students from Europe and
from third countries for professions dealing with the development and the application of
forefront technologies in science. This training will enable young scientists to join and
to successfully participate and graduate in major research projects in astronomy, atomic
physics and subatomic physics, all over the world. AIIAP students will furthermore become
acquainted with the European research infrastructure, research organizations, and strategic
research objectives. The training consists of a 2-year Masters Study in the fields of ground-
and space-based astronomy, atomic and subatomic physics, electronics, instrumentation and
information technology, and involves a substantial level of mobility, both in course work
and in the required Masters Research Project. The AIIAP Masters Research Project must be
carried out in research groups involved in projects which are currently shaping 21st century
astronomy and physics. The Master Course is designed to accommodate 24 selected third-country
students annually, and at most a comparable number of selected European students (who can
choose to participate in just the second half of the curriculum). Successful students will
earn double degrees from two AIIAP-consortium universities. Third-country and European
candidates holding a Bachelor degree in science or engineering can apply for admission to
the AIIAP programme; acceptance will be based on academic qualifications, motivation,
proposed Masters Trajectory and external references.
